Single Path Coding
Single path coding
One Clear Path for Coding. Fewer Denials. Better Results.
Single path coding unifies facility and professional coding into one streamlined workflow. Your coders stay focused. Your claims get cleaner. Your revenue cycle moves faster.
A simpler way to code from start to finish
Single path coding creates one consistent, streamlined workflow for coding guiding users through the process without forcing them to jump between systems, searches, or decision points. It’s not about changing how your team thinks, it’s about removing the obstacles that slow them down.
Why coding teams are making the switch to single path coding
Single path coding isn’t just a better workflow, it’s a better way to run your revenue cycle.
- Reduce coding overhead: Stop reviewing the same chart twice. One Coder handles both facility and professional coding in a single pass cutting costs and eliminating duplicated work.
- Fewer denials, cleaner claims: When facility and professional codes come from the same coder, payer disputes drop and revenue flows faster.
- Capture every dollar: Single Path Coders catch charges that slip between workflows ensuring all services are coded and all RVUs are captured.

Frequently Asked Questions
-
Yes, the TruBridge Encoder Professional Coding Module has a single Coding Tab which contains a Facility Procedures coding grid and a Professional Procedures coding grid – in addition to ICD-10-CM Coding grids. While coding each encounter, a Coder can report the appropriate hospital ICD-10-PCS or CPT/HCPCS codes in the Facility Procedures coding grid and report the appropriate CPT/HCPCS codes for the practitioner(s) in the Professional Procedures coding grid.
-
While coding each encounter, the Coder is able to report the appropriate hospital ICD-10-PCS or CPT/HCPCS codes in the Facility Procedures coding grid, which is where TruBridge has built-in logic for numerous edits including the following Medicare NCCI Hospital Edits: Procedure-to-Procedure (PTP), Medically Unlikely (MUE), and Add-On Code (AOC). The Coder can report the appropriate CPT/HCPCS codes for the practitioner(s) in the Professional Procedures coding grid, which is where TruBridge has built-in logic for numerous edits including the following Medicare NCCI Practitioner Edits: PTP, MUE, and AOC.
-
Single path coding involves coding both the facility component and the professional component for one or more practitioners, so the coding productivity standards will likely differ from any standards already in place. TruBridge recommends that coding managers start establishing single path coding productivity standards – i.e., tracking, monitoring, and measuring coding tasks and non-coding tasks – when managers feel that it is an appropriate time to do so.
-
In most colleges, vocational schools, and workforce development programs, the focus is generally on either hospital coding or professional coding – it is rare for a medical coding program to cover single path coding. This is why TruBridge® created the 140 page “Single Path Coding Upskilling Toolkit,” to help hospitals and health systems build an in-house single path coding training program.
-
There are numerous positions online that don’t reference single path coding in the job title, but the job descriptions state that both hospital and professional coding credentials and experience are required.
There are also numerous hospitals and health systems that have approved the transition to single path coding, but they are struggling to find coding professionals who have this skill set. This is why TruBridge created the 140 page “Single Path Coding Upskilling Toolkit,” to help hospitals and health systems build an in-house single path coding training program.

TruBridge does not offer a single path coding course, however, we understand that lifelong learning is critical to the success of single path coding professionals, which is why we post a Single Path Coding Tip of the Week on our website.
The TruBridge® Encoder Professional Coding Module also includes a CPT-to-PCS Crosswalk and a PCS-to-CPT Crosswalk, which make it easier for single path coders to assign the appropriate ICD-10-PCS codes for the hospital and the appropriate CPT/HCPCS codes for the practitioner(s), when coding inpatient encounters.
