Community Champions: How Surgeons Choice Medical Center Is Empowering Community Health
TruBridge is delighted to celebrate Surgeons Choice Medical Center (SCMC) as a community champion. Based in metro Detroit, SCMC not only delivers high-quality healthcare but also works tirelessly to support local nonprofit organizations, empower youth, and provide resources to those in need. Through its efforts, SCMC is making a lasting impact on the lives of local residents.
A commitment to charity
One of SCMC’s most prominent community initiatives is their annual charity golf outing. Established five years ago by Ronda Seley, SCMC’s medical staff coordinator, and Dr. Steven Craig, CEO, this outing has consistently raised donations for various charitable organizations. Beneficiaries of the event have included causes such as suicide awareness through The J Detroit and youth empowerment with Kids Empowered on the Move. By partnering with these charitable organizations, SCMC demonstrates its commitment to addressing both immediate and long-term community needs.
Building tomorrow’s workforce
Education is another crucial component of SCMC’s community outreach. Their collaboration with Racquet Up Detroit exemplifies their focus on providing students with career pathways in healthcare. Through Racquet Up Detroit’s Career X Connections program, students are offered on-site visits to SCMC, where they receive hands-on exposure to multiple departments within the hospital.
The program gives students a rare opportunity to engage with directors and explore potential career paths in the medical field. This investment in youth and education serves the community and the healthcare industry, helping to close workforce gaps while inspiring students to pursue careers in medicine.
Supporting survivors
Domestic violence and sexual assault are tragic realities for many individuals in Oakland County and beyond. SCMC recognizes this issue and has made it a priority to support survivors through their partnership with HAVEN, Oakland County’s only comprehensive program for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault.
For the past three years, SCMC has contributed to HAVEN’s annual gift giveaway event, which empowers survivors by allowing them to “shop” for gifts for their children and themselves during the holiday season. Besides providing material support, this initiative helps restore a sense of agency and dignity to survivors during what can often be a difficult time of year.
Ongoing community health engagement
Healthcare providers are uniquely positioned to promote wellness and engage the community in life-saving efforts. SCMC has embraced this responsibility through its partnership with Versiti Blood Centers, hosting quarterly blood drives to ensure a steady supply of blood for the community. Blood donations are vital for emergency care, surgeries, and chronic illness management. The quarterly schedule helps guarantee metro Detroit has access to this life-saving resource year-round.
Broader community involvement
SCMC’s community engagement doesn’t end with healthcare services. The team actively participates in local events and holiday initiatives that encourage a sense of community and offer support to those in need. From organizing holiday markets and luncheons to volunteering during the holiday season, SCMC’s staff is dedicated to enhancing the lives of residents, whether through healthcare services or community service.
A holistic approach to community health
Surgeons Choice Medical Center is a shining example of how healthcare providers can make a meaningful impact in their communities. From their annual charity golf outing to their partnerships with local organizations, SCMC is helping to address some of the most pressing health and social issues in metro Detroit.
As a TruBridge community champion, SCMC has shown that healthcare is about more than treating patients within the walls of the hospital. It’s about fostering a healthier, more connected, and more empowered community.
